Why Are So Many Great Women Single? Part III

And so we begin our journey to about 3,000 years ago to find an answer to a question that presents itself to us in the here and now--Why are so many great women single? As I attempt to answer this question from the perspective of the Word of G-D; we will encounter various challenges that we, as single women, must face and conquer. And it is in the beginning of Genesis 24 that our first challenge appears.
Abraham has recently buried Sarah and has graciously been blessed with all things (Genesis 24:1). He calls his most trusted servant and makes him swear that he will not get a wife for his son Issac from the Canaanites.
                    1. Set Apart--Even before we meet Rivka the context shows us that she is a woman who is "set apart." She is not like the Canaanite women; these were women who were immersed in a culture of idolatry, consulting the dead, and those who resorted to everything other than the true G-D (Deuteronomy 18). Rivka was different; she was unique.

The idea of Rivka being "set apart" may not initially be anything particularly eye-catching. But, think about the fact that Rivka lived in a generation that was steeped in "jaw-dropping" idolatrous acts. She lived in a generation that doing what was against G-D's will was the norm. Isn't it quite normal to think that the "mainstream" lifestyles of her day could have been a source of temptation for her? The generation she lived in had its own allures to which she had the choice of either succombing or conquering.
The challenge for single women today is also as great as it was in Rivka's day. The pulls for us to walk contrary to HaShem's will are still as prevelant today as they were then. The Challenge is: "Will we choose to live a life that is set apart and devoted to our Heavenly Father amidst a time when many other things and sometimes people call us to do otherwise? Will we be the type of women who blindly follow the mold and embrace the "status quo?" Or will we be kind of woman who confidently says, "No" to sin; while walking on the path of obedience to the one true G-D of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob?
The first trait Abraham mentioned in his monumental quest for Issac's soulmate was a woman who was not from the Canaanites; a woman who was utterly different. Will we be the type of woman, like Rivka, who conquered the temptations of her generation through surrendering to the wholeness that devotion to G-D brings?

Remember S.W.A.G. "It's all about the way you walk." (Psalm. 128:1 "Blessed is everyone who walks in His ways.")
